How to wear your season

    What color analysis actually is

Color analysis is the simple idea that the colors sitting closest to your face either make you look well-rested and radiant — or tired, sallow and older than you are. It’s not fashion superstition. Your skin has an undertone (warm, cool, or somewhere between), and colors that share that undertone harmonise with you, while colors that fight it draw attention to shadows, redness and lines instead of to you.

The classic system sorts everyone into four color seasons — Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter — based on two things: whether your colouring is warm or cool, and whether it’s light or deep. The quiz above works out both, then hands you the palette that’s genuinely yours. This matters more after 40, not less: as skin loses some of its natural warmth and contrast softens, the wrong colors show up faster than they used to.

The two questions that decide your season

Every season comes down to answering two things about your natural colouring.

Warm or cool? Warm colouring has golden, peachy or yellow undertones; cool colouring has pink, blue or rosy undertones. The quickest home tests: look at your wrist veins (green leans warm, blue leans cool), notice whether gold or silver jewellery flatters you more, and check whether cream or pure white looks better against your face.

Light or deep? This is about the overall depth and contrast of your hair, skin and eyes together. Light, blended colouring with soft contrast points toward Spring or Summer. Deep colouring, or striking high contrast between dark hair and fair skin, points toward Autumn or Winter.

Put them together and you have your season: warm and light is Spring, cool and light is Summer, warm and deep is Autumn, cool and deep is Winter.

The four seasons at a glance

Spring — warm and light. Clear, warm, fresh colours: coral, peach, warm turquoise, golden yellow, camel. Black and icy greys drain you. Your neutrals are warm ivory and golden brown, not stark white and grey.

Summer — cool and soft. Muted, cool, hazy shades: soft rose, powder blue, lavender, sage, dusty mauve. Bright oranges and warm golds overwhelm you. Reach for soft navy and cocoa instead of hard black.

Autumn — warm and deep. Rich, earthy, spicy colours: rust, olive, mustard, terracotta, forest green, teal. Icy pastels and pure white wash you out. Cream, camel and chocolate are your everyday neutrals.

Winter — cool and deep. Bold, clear, saturated colours plus crisp icy pastels: true red, emerald, royal blue, fuchsia, and yes — real black and pure white, which almost no other season wears as well. Muted, earthy tones make you look tired.

How to actually use your palette

You don’t need to throw out your wardrobe or wear head-to-toe colour. The rule that does the heavy lifting: keep your best colors closest to your face — tops, knits, scarves, collars, earrings. That’s where the flattering (or unflattering) effect actually happens. Colours you love that aren’t in your palette can still live below the waist, where they’re further from your complexion.

    A few practical moves:

    • Fix your neutrals first. Most “nothing suits me” problems come from the wrong base colours. Swapping stark white for cream, or hard black for soft navy or chocolate, changes more than any bright ever will.
    • Match your metals. Warm seasons glow in gold, brass and copper; cool seasons in silver, platinum and white gold. It’s a tiny change with an outsized effect right at the face.
    • Use a scarf as a test and a fix. If a jacket or dress isn’t quite your colour, a scarf in your palette at the neckline restores the flattering tone instantly.

    What about grey hair?

Going grey or silver often shifts you cooler, and many warm-season women find their old golds and rusts suddenly feel heavy against silver hair. That doesn’t mean your season “changed” — it means the contrast and coolness around your face increased. If you’ve gone grey and your palette feels off, retake the quiz answering for your hair as it is now, not as it was. Very often warm Autumns drift toward a softer, cooler palette, and everyone finds that clearer, cleaner colours near the face read as more polished against grey.

    Frequently asked questions

Can my color season change over time?

Your underlying undertone rarely changes, but the depth and contrast around your face can — especially as hair greys or lightens. Most people stay in the same warm-or-cool family for life but may shift lighter or softer with age. Re-check every few years, or whenever your hair colour changes significantly.

What if I’m between two seasons?

It’s common — real people don’t fall into perfectly tidy boxes. If you’re borderline, you’re usually sitting between two seasons that share one trait (both warm, or both light). Wear the colours that appear on both palettes with total confidence, and treat the rest as a starting point rather than a rulebook.

Does this work for every skin tone?

Yes. Warm, cool, light and deep undertones exist across every skin colour and ethnicity, and all four seasons include the full range of complexions. The quiz reads undertone and contrast, not how fair or deep your skin is.

Do I have to avoid the colors on my “go easy” list completely?

No. Think of them as colours to keep away from your face or to use in small doses, not banned shades. A winter can absolutely wear a warm rust — as trousers, a bag or shoes, where it’s nowhere near their complexion.

    Are my answers saved anywhere?

No. The quiz runs entirely in your own browser. Your answers are never sent to a server or stored, and if you share your result it carries only your season name — nothing else.
